Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents shot a man, who was then taken to a hospital, while attempting to arrest him during a targeted traffic stop Tuesday in California’s Central Valley, the agency said.

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said the ICE officers fired defensive shots after the person they stopped attempted to run an agent over, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security.

The shooting happened near Interstate 5 in Patterson, about 90 miles south of Sacramento.

DHS identified the person shot as Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez, an undocumented immigrant and “18th Street Gang member wanted in El Salvador for questioning in connection to a murder.”

Attorney Patrick Kolasinski, who is representing Mendoza Hernandez, disputed the DHS account of the encounter and said the agents may have mistaken his client for someone with a similar name, theAssociated Pressreported.

CNN reached out to Kolasinski for comment.

Mendoza Hernandez, a day laborer, has a 2-year-old daughter and is engaged to a US citizen, Kolasinski told the AP.

Mendoza Hernandez’s family wasn’t able to immediately see him in the hospital, but were told he was stable, Kolasinski added.

Two dashcam videos obtained by CNN show a car crossing over the highway lane divider after being surrounded by agents. One agent is seen running out of the way of the car. It’s not clear exactly when agents fired at the vehicle because the footage does not have sound.

“As officers approached the car, the wanted gang member weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run an officer over. Following their training, our officers fired defensive shots to protect themselves, their fellow agents, and the public,” the DHS statement said.

DHS says its agents have been the target of increasing violence, citing more than180 vehicle attackssince Trump’s second term started. But the administration’s initial accounts of shootings involving federal agents have, in some cases, changed over time – or been proven wrong altogether.

The FBI is conducting an investigation, Acting Special Agent in Charge Eugene Wu said. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office told CNN it’s assisting, and it confirmed no local law enforcement was involved with the incident.

Dashcam footage captures incident

At least three law enforcement agents are seen surrounding a black vehicle on a road near Interstate 5, video obtained by CNN shows. The black vehicle then backs up and its passenger-side door hits another car on the road.

Agents then point their guns at the vehicle as it stops for about two seconds. The car then turns left and crosses over the highway lane divider, while an agent runs out of the way of the car.

It’s not clear when exactly agents fired at the vehicle.

Christina Valencia, whose Tesla captured one of the videos obtained by CNN, said she noticed the flashing lights from her car.

“All of a sudden I heard like a shot fired … and then maybe like 10 seconds later, I heard about five or six more go off,” she said.

CNN cannot independently confirm Valencia’s account of the gunfire.

From there, the two agents ran to their trucks and then drove in the direction of the suspect, she said. They ultimately ended up under a nearby overpass.

When the shots started, she said she put her car in reverse. “I was scared because I was like there’s nowhere for me to go,” Valencia said.

Credibility of DHS accounts questioned in prior car-involved incidents

While agents have beensubjected to violencesince the start of Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration last year, DHS has also at times faceda crisis of credibilityregarding claims it has made in the aftermath of some high-profile incidents. In arrests and use-of-force encounters across the country, versions provided by DHS of some eventshave been contradictedby eyewitness accounts and bystander video and challenged by independent judges.

Altercations in or around vehicles have been asteady symbolof the administration’s immigration crackdown, includingcar crashesbetween federal agents and people who try to flee, traffic stopsturned violentand alleged rammings involving pro-immigrant activists.

The phrase “weaponized his/her vehicle” has beenrepeated by officialsincluding former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem when she described Renee Good, a Minneapolis mother shot and killed by an ICE agent this year. Good’s death prompted widespread protests and her burgundy SUV has become a recognizable symbol of the chaotic immigration operations in Minneapolis.

The Trump administration has also come under criticism for deporting migrants it alleges are gang members, without providing evidence, such as in the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. It accused wrongly deported Abrego Garcia of being an active member of MS-13 - a claim his lawyer and family deny. Abrego Garcia is currentlyfighting against deportationin federal court.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has urged federal law enforcement to collaborate with state and local partners in investigating Tuesday’s shooting.

“As is established practice, we expect our federal law enforcement partners to appropriately collaborate with state and local law enforcement as this matter is investigated,” Newsom’s office saidon X.

Paris Jackson Accuses Michael Estate Executors of Using Filing to ‘Mock’ Her — Report

MichaelJackson‘sdaughter,Paris Jackson, reportedly claims that her father’s estate executors used court filings to “mock” her. Paris’s attorneys claim the executors “have used her father’s money to attack her” amid an ongoing legal battle over finances.

Paris Jackson is a beneficiary of her late father’s estate, along with her brothers, Prince and Bigi. The 28-year-old has stated in her filing that this ordeal is painful for her.

Paris Jackson accuses estate executors of ‘mocking’ her, claims report

Michael Jackson’s daughter, Paris Jackson, reportedly accused the estate’s executors of belittling her in a new filing. As per documents obtained byPEOPLE,she filed a new legal document on April 6. In the documents, she accused executors John Branca and John McClain of using the latest reports to “mock and belittle her.”

The filing states, “This overlitigation is waste. At nearly every hearing… Executors try to avoid the merits by characterizing Paris’s concerns as lawyer-driven or in service of some purported desire for media attention. Neither is true. This litigation is painful for Paris. It is a distraction from her own life and her own career.”

The 28-year-old has accused Branca and McClain of abusing their roles as executors for their own benefit, a claim the two executors have categorically denied. This comes after the executors filed an 83-page status report earlier this month discussing a March 24 court hearing. According to the executors, Paris’ legal team allegedly pulled out at the last minute after previously agreeing to everything.

The core issue between the two parties is the estate’s annual accounting information. According to Paris’ filing, she has requested of “an efficient, transparent, and orderly process” and accused the executors of “operat(ing) in the dark.”

In her new filing, the 28-year-old has alleged that the executors have used the media to “attack” her, which she deems “unacceptable.” She cited a comment allegedly made by the executors’ attorney, Jonathan Steinsapir, at the March 11 hearing. According to the filing, Steinsapir remarked that Paris was “strutting” into the courtroom.

The filing further states that these personal attacks are used to bully Paris into submission. However, they have nothing to do with the estate itself. Steinsapir denied these claims to the outlet and claimed that Paris and her attorneys have orchestrated this media campaign.

At least 8 dead after series of police pursuits across US

A string of high-speed police car chases resulted in at least eight deaths and several injuries over a span of less than a week, marking the latest deadly incidents in an upward trend of police pursuit fatalities in the United States.

USA TODAY

In Texas, police said a man died early on Sunday, April 5, after fleeing from officers and crashing off the roadway. The Montgomery Advertiser, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported that four people died after a driver attempted to evade a state trooper and struck a tree in rural Alabama on Friday, April 3.

In Southern California, authorities said three people were killed in separate incidents last week after local law enforcement tried to pursue two suspects who then collided with other vehicles.

Hundreds of people die each year during police pursuits, according toexperts and research. The longstanding police practice has faced criticism for years.

A study published inThe Journal of the American Medical Association(JAMA) in 2024 found that research spanning from 1982 to 2020 "suggests an increasing trend in fatalities resulting from police pursuits" in the United States. In a2023 report, the Police Executive Research Forum, a police research and policy organization, called high-speed vehicular pursuits "one of the most controversial and dangerous police activities."

Citing data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the report noted that there were more than 2,200 fatal vehicle crashes involving a police pursuit from 2015 to 2020. The report recommended that law enforcement agencies only conduct pursuits when a violent crime has been committed and the suspect poses an imminent threat.

"While officers’ decisions to initiate or continue a pursuit are driven by an understandable desire to catch a fleeing suspect, this desire sometimes results in excessive risk-taking and negative consequences for officers, innocent bystanders, the motorist being pursued, and any passengers in either vehicle," the report states.

Driver dies after fleeing from Texas police

In anews release, the Fort Worth Police Department said officers were involved in a vehicle pursuit that resulted in a fatal crash at about 2:34 a.m. local time on April 5. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop after seeing a vehicle driving without headlights, striking another vehicle on Interstate 35, and failing to stop.

The driver fled from officers and then hit another vehicle, according to police. The suspect then exited the highway and later crashed off the roadway.

Officers located the vehicle and found 2 men, including a passenger who sustained minor injuries and the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The passenger was transported to a local hospital with his injuries.

No other injuries were reported in the incident, according to police.

4 killed in Alabama while evading state trooper

Capt. Jeremy Burkett, a spokesperson for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, confirmed to the Montgomery Advertiser that four people died after the driver allegedly tried to evade a state trooper in Pike County.

Tykevious Russaw, 27, was driving with three other passengers in his 2022 Hyundai Elantra, Burkett said. He identified the passengers as Robert Hall, 27; Quamay Richardson, 24; and a 17-year-old whose name was not publicly released.

The incident occurred at around 11:57 p.m. local time on April 3, when Russaw's vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree while attempting to evade a trooper, according to Burkett. He said Russaw, Hall, and the 17-year-old were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, causing all three of them to be ejected.

Richardson was the only passenger not ejected, Burkett said. All four passengers in the vehicle were pronounced dead on the scene after the crash.

In San Clemente, California, a coastal city in Orange County, the sheriff's department said in anews releasethat deputies were attempting to stop a U-Haul van with no license plates that was reported stolen on March 30. When deputies tried to stop the vehicle, the sheriff's department said the driver accelerated and collided with an SUV about less than half a mile away.

The driver of the SUV was killed in the crash, and her three passengers were transported to the hospital in critical condition, according to the sheriff's department. The suspect ran from deputies and was later arrested, while the passenger of the stolen U-Haul remained at the scene and was also taken into custody.
