Josh Groban talks 'core memory' of recording with his dad at Louis Armstrong’s studio

Josh Groban’ssatiny baritone has coated classical pop, Italian standards, Broadway boomers and holiday singalongs.

USA TODAY

On “Cinematic,” out now, Groban sinks into movie classics, another genre well-suited to his robust vocals.

From Adele’s Oscar-winning James Bond theme (“Skyfall”) to timeless Disney sentiments (“When You Wish Upon a Star” from “Pinocchio”) to forceful drama (“Brucia La Terra” from “The Godfather”), Groban exercises every facet ofhis chameleonic instrument.

His 10th albumis also peppered with guests including upcoming tour partnerJennifer Hudsonon a duet arrangement of “Unchained Melody,” the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angelesaugmenting “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,”and, most special to Groban, his father Jack playing trumpet on the eternally swoony “Moon River.”

Calling recently from Los Angeles – and just beforeannouncing his engagementto Natalie McQueen andreceiving a staron the Hollywood Walk of Fame - the always affable Groban, 45, chatted about recording with his dad in Louis Armstrong’s studio, his appreciation of Phil Collins and paying tribute to Rob Reiner in song.

Josh Groban releases

You had infinite choices with this album. How did you whittle it down to 10 songs?

I knew what my bookends were. “As Time Goes By” would open the album because (orchestrator) Jeff Atmajian wrote an opening arrangement that captured the essence of what I wanted people to hear first. And then to end with a song that has meant so much to me (“Stand By Me”) and include atribute to Rob Reiner.

You said “the why” was a big factor in choosing these songs. Why that particular Rob movie?

Obviously, tragically, the whybecame very apparent. We missed the (recording) deadline because it was a last-minute decision to do (“Stand By Me”) and that worked in its favor because it was intimate and that was exactly how we wanted it. It’s one of the most important things I’ve ever recorded. It deserved to be a final thought.

Did you rewatch some of these movies before recording?

(Laughs) I did! Not just to get back in the mood but also to educate myself about some of the films that admittedly I didn’t know the songs were from. The cool thing about an album like this is everyone knows the theme from that movie. But it also pays tribute to the songs that were maybe far more popular than the movies themselves.

You mean like “Against All Odds”? Phil Collins has written some timeless songs even though he often gets a bad rap.

I think Phil Collins has written some of the most brilliant songs, period. But something unlocks in him when writing in service of a film and that’s not uncommon.

Josh Groban's

Your dad, Jack, also appears on the album. Is this the first time you’ve recorded together?

This is the first time he’s been on record period. He did a version of “Old Devil Moon” with me in 2015 (during a show in Los Angeles) and it was one of my favorite moments onstage ever. I have a photo from it but no recording. I knew he could play and when (conductor/arranger) Vince Mendoza wrote this brilliant rendition of “Moon River” I asked (my dad) if he thought he could handle the arrangement. He practiced at home and I’d come to the house and listen to him play it. He’s going to be 80 this summer. He really crushed it. (Album producer) Greg Wells took the initiative to get Sunset Sound, Louis Armstrong’s favorite studio and room, and got his stool for my dad to sit on. My whole family came to watch. It was a core memory for all of us.

Do you think your dad was nervous?

My dad is the coolest guy I know. On the surface he doesn’t get thrown. This meant so much to him too, and for us to share as a father and son. He sacrificed so much. He was a musician. He was brilliant at the trumpet but it was a time when deciding to go all-in on an artistic dream was at odds with a family. So my brother and I could stand on the back of that stability to follow our artistic dream.

Why was it important for you to feature the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles on “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”?

When we were trying to figure out what songs would be relevant today, that song is so iconic and Elton (John) is so iconic and I grew up listening to that song. Of course I thought, what do I have to add to this? We were listening to Elton’s version and reading lyrics and doomscrolling about the fear in the world and the division and where is the feeling of love? So we thought, what if we view the approach as an anthem to discovering that feeling and to give that love to communities that really need it.

Had you ever performed with them before?

I sang with the Gay Men’s Choir for (President) Obama’s first inauguration and I remembered the power of their voices. But also, representing an allyship with a community that needs to feel the love was an inspiration. I was honored they said yes.

Josh Groban will tour with Jennifer Hudson in summer 2026 and return to Las Vegas for a special engagement in October.

You and Jennifer Hudson make a swoony pair on “Unchained Melody.” Do you have plans to do anything together on your upcoming tour?

Yeah, we’re definitely going to sing it together during the show. Her voice is such an extraordinary instrument ... We sang together for the first time (on a holiday special in 2024). We did “O Holy Night” and when our voices came together on that final “Noel,” we looked at each other like, wehaveto do this again.

You’re also heading back toCaesars Palace in Las Vegasin October with your “Gems” residency. Will these shows be different than the tour?

The show we created for Vegas took time to craft so we want to have a show that represents what we can only do for Vegas. But every time I come back I want there to be enough changes to whatever I’m doing in that moment, so “Cinematic” will be represented.

You’ve pivoted back to music, but any plans to return to the theater after this album and tour cycle?

It just comes down to whether the right thing feels as exciting as the last two (Groban earned Tony nominations for “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812” and“Sweeney Todd”). I wasn’t planning on either of them, but I knew from the excitement I had in my creative soul they were shows I would drop everything for. I would love to do something new, maybe even off-Broadway. Theater is always an opportunity to spread my wings.

I would be remiss if I didn’t ask ifyour dog Georgeis still traveling with you?

He is not really the traveling Westie I thought he might turn out to be. He’s shown himself to be a very special dog with his own likes and those don’t involve a tour bus. He loves his little buddies in LA. He gets nervous in situations he doesn’t know. But he gets cuter by the day. He hasa little sisternow, who is 50 pounds – Stevie.

Is she named for Stevie Nicks?

She is. My (fiancée) is a big fan and she got to name her. But she is the adventure dog and she is all love.

  • Wilson recently celebrated 10 years cancer-free, expressing gratitude for her doctors, family, and modern medical advancements

Rita Wilsonis reflecting on how her relationship with her body changed after breast cancer.

In arecent PEOPLE cover story, the actress and singer opens up about the challenges she faced following her 2015 diagnosis.

Wilson's sentiments are detailed in the bluesy song"Whose Body Is This?"from her new albumSound of a Woman, which also explores how women may not recognize their bodies after giving birth.

Rita WilsonCredit: Mike Rosenthal

"When you have a baby or when you carry a baby like I did, and you give birth to that life, and then you nurture that life — I nursed both my sons — you really have this extraordinary awe for what your body can do, what it has done, how it's there for you, and it's there for others," says theGirlsactress, 69, who is mom to actor sonsChet Hanks, 35, andTruman Hanks, 30.

The experience was "incredible" for Wilson.

"Even though your body changes and it shifts, and it might look different, you have such an appreciation for it. I remember distinctly just being amazed at what it could do," she recalls.

But when Wilson was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a double mastectomy thereafter, she had a very different relationship with her body.

"These parts of your body that had been there for you in such a beautiful way were gone," theThat Thing You Do!star recalls. "I'm very grateful that there are things nowadays in modern medicine like reconstruction and implants, because in my mom's generation, if you had breast cancer, that was it. There was nothing. You were left with sort of a shadow."

Wilson says she spent a lot of time contemplating the paradoxical nature of her body during those years.

"It was interesting to look at my body in that way and see it, understand what is missing, but also [see] what my body could do to keep me healing and healthy and have that appreciation," she says.

Of her double mastectomy and reconstruction, Wilson adds, "I like to say that I've finally gone Hollywood now and I have some in place."

She then shared her appreciation for her doctors, friends and family.

"The gratitude is overwhelming. Didn't always feel this way. And you know that, anybody who's going through [it, or] who's survived knows that it's an up and down, like, hamster wheel. But then you get to this point,” said Wilson.

“Price Is Right” contestant wins largest single-game prize in show's 54-year history

A contestant on Friday's episode of The Price Is Right set a new all-time high in winnings from a single pricing game.

Key Points

  • Vanessa from Virginia walked away with $240,150 in cash and prizes after playing Lion's Share.

  • This new record surpasses the last, set in 2010, by more than $30,000.

After more than five decades on the air,The Price Is Rightis still breaking records.

A contestant on Friday's episode of the long-running game show set a new all-time high in winnings from a single pricing game. After several wild rounds of the game Lion's Share, Vanessa from Virginia walked away with $240,150 in cash and prizes— the largest one-game haul a contestant has ever won in the CBS daytime show's 54-year history.

The retired veteran made her mark in a special Mother's Day-themed episode, with her daughter cheering her on from the sidelines.

Lion's Share, an MGM-branded game that premiered last year as a replacement for Pay the Rent, revolves around grocery price guessing.

In the game, each contestant is able to win up to five balls depending on their number of correct guesses. Balls are then dropped into a wind tunnel, which reveal hidden prize amounts. But that's not all: HostDrew Careythen commands contestants to choose between walking away with the dollar value displayed on the screen or risking it all to grow their earnings further.

That's exactly what Vanessa did, and after very little deliberation. Continued correct guesses yielded more prize balls, which revealed more earnings, eventually loading her up with $227,500 in cash. A luxury trip to Morocco valued at $12,650 ultimately brought her total up to $240,150.

Vanessa's win clears the previous record by a wide margin. In 2016, contestant Christen Freeman won $210,000 in the game Cliffhangers, and also walked away with a steam iron, portable heater, and drink mixer.

Vanessa may be the biggest winner when it comes to earnings from a single game, but her $240,150 total is no match for the overall killing that one contestant made in a 2019 episode.

Michael Stouber left the roller coaster ride of an episode with a grand total of $262,743 in cash and prizes. That included $202,000 from a game of Plinko, a nearly $30,000 Showcase win, an equivalent value Nissan Sentra S, a $1,475 diamond bracelet, and more.

Kate Middleton’s Garden Party Dress Blooms With an Unexpected 3-D Floral Detail

Kate Middleton has tradedsleek suitingfor pure spring bliss. Following an appearance yesterday at the University of East London, the Princess of Wales stepped out this afternoon for the annual Garden Party in a look that perfectly captured the romance of the season.

Elle

Kate turned to one of her tried-and-true brands, Self-Portrait, for the occasion. She radiated elegance in a cream dress that blended classic tailoring with soft, feminine details. It began with a structured blazer-style bodice, complete with a cinched waist and a squared neckline, and flowed into a pleated maxi skirt with micro polka dots. A sculptural floral corsage was built into one side of the jacket, adding whimsy to the look.

The annual Garden Party has been a fashion fixture for the Waleses over the years, and a destination where Kate can lean into her polished occasion wear. In 2025, she returned to the gathering for the first time in two years in a delicious butter yellow dress from Emilia Wickstead. And in previous years, the princess has turned to brands like Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane, and Elie Saab for her garden party needs.

Kate often gravitates toward bold color and dramatic silhouettes for the party—vibrant jewel tones, prim tea dresses, flashes of lace and florals. But for this year’s edition, she had something softer and more playful in mind—and blooming from her jacket.

Jane Fonda breaks silence on ex-husband Ted Turner's death: 'I loved Ted with all my heart'

Key Points

  • The actress was married to the CNN founder from 1991 until 2001.

  • Turner announced that he'd been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia in 2018.

Jane Fondais paying tribute to herlate ex-husband Ted Turnerwith a lengthy statement.

"MY IMMEDIATE THOUGHTS ABOUT TED," Fonda began on Wednesday via Instagram, "He swept into my life, a gloriously handsome, deeply romantic, swashbuckling pirate and I’ve never been the same. He needed me. No one had ever let me know they needed me, and this wasn’t your average human being that needed me, this was the creator of CNN, and Turner Classic Movies, who had won the America’s Cup as the world’s greatest sailor. He had a big life, a brilliant mind and a soaring sense of humor. "

The Oscar-winning actress was married to the CNN founder from 1991 until 2001.

"He could also take care of me. That was new as well. To be needed and cared for simultaneously is transformative. Ted Turner helped me believe in myself. He gave me confidence. I think I did the same for him, but that’s what women are raised to do. Men like Ted aren’t supposed to express need and vulnerability. That was Ted’s greatest strength, I believe," she continued.

Turner and Fonda in 2017Credit: Rick Diamond/Getty

Fonda said that Turner "taught me more than any other person or school classes" about nature, wildlife, hunting, fishing, business and strategy.

"Ted was supremely strategic. It was likely innate, but he studied the Classics in college, knew about the Peleponesian War inside and out and the strategies used by Alexander the Great and even Genghis Khan. And sailing big boats as he did further honed those strategic talents which he then brought into his businesses to much success. He could see around corners for sure," she wrote. "Next to Katharine Hepburn, Ted was the most competitive person I have ever met and that was fascinating to witness. Whether it was who’d made the most ski runs at the end of the day, to acres of land owned (stewarded is the more fitting word for his relationship to land), who had the most billions, how many countries he’d made love to his prior lover in and could I match that, it was challenging. Ted was challenging, but I’ve always been up for a challenge, and with Ted it was almost always worth it. "

Fonda noted that she loved "Ted with all my heart."

"I see him in heaven now with all the wildlife he helped bring back from extinction – the black footed ferrets, the prairie dogs, Big Horned sheep, Mexican Gray Wolf, the Yellowstone wolf pack, bison, the red cockaded woodpecker and so many more, they’re all gathered at the pearly gates applauding and thanking him for saving their species," she wrote.

She acknowledged Turner's five children. "Five talented, complex kids who I had the privilege of becoming stepmother to," she wrote. "I had four stepmothers growing up and I know how important stepmothers can be, so we all did our best to build an extended, rag tag family, and I love them to this day. If it was complicated to be married to him, think how complicated it was being his child. And they are all doing fine."

Fonda concluded: "Rest in Peace, dearest Ted. You are loved and you will be remembered."

Fonda has spoken fondly of her relationship with Turner in the decades since their split, revealing on an 2023 episode of theConan O’Brien Needs a Friendpodcast that the environmentalist was instrumental in helping her to find and embrace her own sense of humor.

“Spending 10 years with Ted, who is hysterical, oh my God he is funny,” she remarked at the time. “And outrageous. And I saw it’s okay to be outrageous. And that really helped me.”

She went on to compare Turner to a “sieve,” adding, “It just all comes out. But his take on life is just — like Lily [Tomlin’s] — it’s inherently funny.”

The pair also used their voices for good during their marriage, working together to co-found the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power and Potential (GCAPP) in 1995. The charity organization works to "improve the overall health and well-being of young people" in the Peach state, per its website.

Speaking at GCAPP's 30th annual EmPower Party and gala event last November, Fonda became emotional as she credited Turner with its continued success.

"It was a very challenging time in Georgia. Had I not been with Ted, this was something, had he not stood by me with his love and support, we never would have survived," she told the crowd, perPEOPLE.

She continued, "Ted’s not here, but he is here in my heart and I know he is here in a lot of our hearts."

Turner Enterprises announced the billionaire entrepreneur’s death in a May 6 statement.

"Ted was an intensely involved and committed leader, intrepid, fearless and always willing to back a hunch and trust his own judgement," CNN CEO Mark Thompson said. "He was and always will be the presiding spirit of CNN. Ted is the giant on whose shoulders we stand, and we will all take a moment today to recognize him and his impact on our lives and the world."

News of Turner's death comes eight years after he revealed in a 2018 interview withGood Morning Americathat he'd been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia.

White House calls Mark Hamill 'sick' after actor's Trump grave post

The White House has called Star Wars actor Mark Hamill "one sick individual" after he posted an AI-generated image of US President Donald Trump in a ‌shallow grave, alongside the caption "if only".

BBC Mark Hamill, suited and wearing sunglasses, attends the Film Independent Spirit Awards at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles in February

The image, posted on Hamill's Bluesky account, showed Trump lying with his eyes shut, next to a headstone with the inscription "Donald J. Trump 1946-2024".

Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars films from 1977 onwards, later deleted the post and apologised. "Actually, I was wishing him the opposite of dead, but apologize if you found the image inappropriate," he wrote.

BBC News has asked the actor's representatives for a comment on the White House remarks about him.

In the now-deleted X post, Hamill - who has also voiced the Joker character in various DC Comics projects - wrote that Trump "should live long enough to witness his inevitable devastating loss in the midterms, be held accountable for his unprecedented corruption, impeached, convicted & humiliated for his countless crimes. Long enough to realize he'll be disgraced in the history books, forevermore."

The White House press team responded on the same platform, calling Hamill "one sick individual".

"These Radical Left lunatics ‌just can't help themselves," they replied.

"This kind of rhetoric is exactly what has inspired three assassination attempts in two years against our President."

Last month, a man fired a shotgun outside the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, in what the authorities have said wasan attempt to assassinate Trump.

Following the shooting, Melania Trump and other US officials demanded that comedian and TV chat show host Jimmy Kimmel be sacked by ABC after he joked on-air, in a parody sketch days before the shooting, that the first lady had a "glow like an expectant widow".

Mrs Trump said Kimmel's "hateful and violent rhetoric" was intended to divide the US, adding: "It is time for ABC to take a stand.

"How many times will ABC's leadership enable Kimmel's atrocious behaviour at the expense of our community?"

Kimmel rejected the criticism, saying his joke had been a reference to the couple's 24-year age difference.

"I agree that hateful and violent rhetoric is something we should reject," he later said on-air.

"I do, and I think a great place to start to dial that back would be to have a conversation with your husband about it."

The president wasshot in the ear at a rally in Pennsylvaniain 2024, where the gunman was killed by the Secret Service.

The same year, a man was found hiding in bushes with weapons close to where Trump was playing golf. In February, he wasconvicted of an attempted assassination.

Stephen Colbert Names ‘White Whale’ Guest He Wants on The Late Show

Late-night hosts have long pursued guests who seem unattainable, figures whose presence alone could transform a show. AsThe Late Shownears its end,Stephen Colbertshared his own take on that chase in a recentinterview. The beloved host revealed thatPope Leosits at the very top of his personal guest wish list, calling him his ultimate “white whale.”

Stephen Colbert reveals the guest he wants to interview on The Late Show

Stephen Colbert has shared the name at the top of his Late Show guest wishlist, the interview he wants most before the curtain falls.

In a new interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, the comedian reflected on the upcoming end of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Colbert shared that he hopes Pope Leo XIV will join him on air before the show ends its run on CBS on May 21.

“The pope is my white whale,” Colbert, an outspoken Catholic, shared in the interview. “I wrote him. I said, ‘Come on!’ No, I said, ‘Your Holiness, I hope this letter finds you well or, at the very least, infallible. Would you please come on my show? We don’t have to talk about politics,'” he added.

Stephen Colbert noted that keeping politics off the table might entice the Chicago-born pope to visit The Late Show.

“I didn’t really think he’d want to talk about politics or anything like that,” he continued. “Little did I know that the guy could throw a punch [as he recently proved, feuding with Trump over the Iran war]. I said, ‘Let’s talk about being an American Catholic,'” Colbert shared.
