  • "You have an incredible eye to be able to spot this," the appraiser told him

One man got the surprise of a lifetime when he learned the value of an item he thrifted for $1.50.

On the Monday, May 11, episode ofAntiques Roadshow, which took place atGrant’s Farm in St. Louis, Mo., a guest showcased a burnt orange suede purse with a colorful gemstone detail.

"I just picked it up in a thrift store and liked it, and thought it was pretty," he tells appraiser Katherine Van Dell, adding that he purchased it in 2018 or 2019."It's an absolutely exquisite art deco purse," Van Dell says. She explains that the gemstone design is constructed with platinum and contains rubies, emeralds, sapphires and old European-cut diamonds.

"This style in the Art Deco period would be known as Tutti Frutti, and it was made really popular by a specific maker, Cartier," she continues. "So right when you brought this to the table, I immediately thought to myself, 'Is that Cartier?'"

Van Dell says she was able to confirm that the item was indeed Cartier when she opened the bag and saw the name of the French fashion house written inside.

After the guest tells Van Dell he paid $1.50 for the item, she asks, "Do you have any idea of what you think it's worth?""I was hoping maybe $2,000 or $3,000," he replies."Conservatively, in an auction situation today, it's worth about $35,000," says Van Dell. "And that's fair market value."The guest then becomes visibly emotional. "Wow. Well, that's something. Sorry," he says as he wipes away tears.

"No, it's wonderful," Van Dell replies. "You're an expert looker, and a wonderful picker, and you have an incredible eye to be able to spot this."

Martin, daughter of Paltrow and her ex Chris Martin, stars in Chloé's new campaign for Chloé à la Plage. Lensed by David Sims, the dreamy, sun-drenched photo shoot leans into fantasies of summer. “This year, Chloé à la Plage is an ode to a surreal summer fantasy. It’s about that dreamlike state and the poetry of summer. Apple, with her radiance and timeless beauty, draws us into this feeling in the most natural way," Chemena Kamali, Creative Director of Chloé, said in a statement.

Posing in swimwear and sundresses with her long blonde hair styled in effortless textured waves, Apple wears an array of chunky gold and silver boho chic accessories and a barely-there bronzed glam. Looking at the ethereal photos, it's impossible not to see Paltrow circa the mid-'90s.

This is hardly the first time Apple has looked almost identical to her mom. Last month, she embraced the Goop mogul'sclassic minimalist '90s style for her grad photos. In February, she posed by the pool in abikini with a Paltrow-esque '90s updo. In December,Martin rewore one of her mom's vintage '90s dressesand even channeled her mom's hair for theMarty Supremepremiere. Last October, she once againlooked just like her momfor a campaign for Self Portrait and in September, thepair twinned for a Gap campaign.

And it's not just Martin's fashion and hair that evoke a young Paltrow—apparently, the 21-year-old is also a budding "theater kid." "I love dancing and I love acting,” Apple toldVogue. “My dream is to act.”
