Maxwell invokes the Fifth Amendment at closed virtual House Oversight deposition

Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted co-conspirator of Jeffrey Epstein, invoked the Fifth Amendment during the closed-door virtual deposition before the House Oversight Committee on Monday, according to Chairman James Comer.

ABC News

It was expected that Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence in federal prison in Texas, would refuse to answer questionsfrom lawmakers and committee staffers as part of the panel's investigation into the late financier and his ties to some of the world's most powerful figures in politics, business and entertainment. Epstein, a convicted sex offender, died by suicide in 2019 while at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City.

Latest release of Epstein files includes some survivors' names, despite DOJ assurances, lawyers say

Maxwell has a petition pending in federal court in New York which seeks to overturn her conviction or reduce her sentence.

Some committee lawmakers were expected to attend the closed deposition.

The deposition was more than six months in the making, and was first requested last July, when Comerformally issued a subpoenafor a deposition with Maxwell to occur at Federal Correctional Institution Tallahassee on Aug. 11.

Comer agreed to delay the deposition as Maxwell awaited a Supreme Court ruling on her appeal, which she ultimately lost.

During that interview, Maxwell told Blanche that she never witnessed nor heard of any criminal or inappropriate activity by President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton, nor any of the well-known men who associated with Epstein, according to the sources.

The closed deposition with Maxwell comes on the same day that members of Congress can go to the Department of Justice to view unredacted versions of the Epstein files that the department has withheld from public disclosure.

Officials deny seeking quick end to asylum claims for the Minneapolis family of 5-year-old

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Federal authorities have denied attempting to expedite an end to asylum claims by the family of a 5-year-old boy who wasdetained with his fatherduring the immigration crackdown that has shaken the Minneapolis area.

Images of Liam Conejo Ramos wearing a bunny hat and Spider-Man backpack surrounded by immigration officers stirred outrageover the crackdown.

Danielle Molliver, a lawyer for the boy and his father, told the New York Times that the government was attempting to speed up the deportation proceedings, calling the actions "extraordinary" and possibly "retaliatory."

The government denied that.

"These are regular removal proceedings. They are not in expedited removal," Department of Homeland Security official Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement, adding "there is nothing retaliatory about enforcing the nation's immigration laws."

The boy and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, who originally is from Ecuador, were detained in a Minneapolis suburb on Jan. 20. They were taken to a detention facility in Dilley, Texas.

They were released followinga judge's orderand returned to Minnesota on Feb. 1.

Neighbors and school officials have accused federal immigration officers of usingthe preschooler as "bait"by telling him to knock on the door to his house so that his mother would come outside. DHS has called that description of events an "abject lie." It said the father fled on foot and left the boy in a running vehicle in their driveway.

The government said the boy's father entered the U.S. illegally from Ecuador in December 2024. The family's lawyer said he has an asylum claim pending that allows him to stay in the U.S.

Jason Kelce, one of PEOPLE's Sexiest Men Alive of 2023, shares two votes for this year's awards

The former Philadelphia Eagles star says his first option was a recent guest on his and Travis Kelce's New Heights podcast

He also nominates a New York Giants player who is "sexy with the way he operates"

Jason Kelce is throwing in his nomination for PEOPLE's 2025 Sexiest Man Alive.

The retired NFL star, 37 — who was one of 2023's honorees alongside Pedro Pascal and TimothĂ©e Chalamet, among others — tells PEOPLE the first person that comes to mind is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, a recent guest on his podcast New Heights, which he co-hosts with his brother Travis Kelce.

"I just had The Rock on the podcast and it's hard to say that anybody's sexier than that," he says while speaking with PEOPLE about the launch of Slow Burn by Kingsford, a new limited-edition fragrance inspired by Jason.

Admitting it's a tough question, the former Philadelphia Eagle shares another name, this time a fellow football player: "I'm going to go with Cam Skattebo," he says, referring to the New York Giants rookie who won over NFL fans before suffering a gruesome season-ending injury last week.

"He's sexy with the way he operates, so I respect that," Jason says.

After Jason was named one of PEOPLE's 2023 Sexiest Men Alive, he was asked about his new status during an interview with SportsRadio 94WIP.

"Are you actually one of the sexiest men alive in your opinion? Because PEOPLE magazine says you are," the interviewer asked.

"I'm not even the sexiest man in my family, let alone the sexiest man alive," Jason joked back. "I mean, what are we talking about here?"

"It's fun and the publicity around the family and everything has gone to a completely different level. But yeah, that was funny to see for sure," he added.

Travis, 36, said on an episode of New Heights at the time that he was "all for it" and "proud" after his "sexy Batman" brother made the list. The Chiefs star also took the chance to tease his brother during the episode, jokingly suggesting that the whole Kelce family assumed PEOPLE "must have just written the wrong name in by accident."
